Project Description

The Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Women's and Children's Tower aligns two different institutions: Dignity Health and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, under one roof. The new 375,000 square-foot tower is located on Dignity’s Mercy Gilbert Campus in Gilbert. The five-story tower contains a mix of 206 inpatient beds, labor and delivery rooms, and an emergency department (ED) dedicated to obstetrics. Pediatric services includes a pediatric ED and OR and a Level 3 NICU.
There were many challenges during this large-scale project. Record high temperatures posed a threat during the summer months. Full PPE, including face masks, were mandatory on the jobsite, and an eight-month suspension was required due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The existing central plant was up and operational for the duration of the project, feeding chilled water to the hospital, forcing our skilled foremen to work with 24-inch pipe around a live system, leaving no room for error! Once up and operational (4) pumps, (3) new chillers, (3) existing chillers, (3) new cooling towers, and (3) existing cooling towers will integrate into one system without ever having to shut down the existing system.
